According to a fall 2011 survey of Michigan hospitals by the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH), 41 percent of Michigan hospitals have in place some kind of mandatory influenza vaccine policy for health care personnel (HCP). That number is steadily increasing as Michigan hospitals continue their patient safety and quality efforts by avoiding the spread of influenza in the patient care setting. This fall, the MHA is partnering with the MDCH to empower hospitals to take action if their influenza vaccination policies do not fully recognize the known threat that influenza poses to patients. The materials below assist hospitals in exploring the implementation of mandatory HCP vaccination policies.
Michigan hospitals are known for taking voluntary action that consistently puts patients first, without the need for legislative mandates or regulatory requirements. Hospitals are encouraged to support this tradition by ensuring their HCP vaccination policy is best serving their patients, employees and community. For more information, contact Sam R. Watson senior vice president, Patient Safety and Quality, at the MHA.
