June 29 - July 1, 2011 • Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island

"Luna, Earth's companion in the lonely cosmos, floated just 60 miles away. Aboard the lunar module named Eagle, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had only to cross that narrow chasm to go where no man had gone before. Armstrong later would admit his concerns before attempting the landing, saying 'the unknowns were rampant,' and 'there were just a thousand things to worry about'."*

Like the ambitious space program of the Kennedy era, the ambitious health care system of today is full of unknowns and risks. The fate of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is in limbo as the courts decide its constitutionality. Reimbursement cuts will amount to $155 billion over 10 years, and it is unclear whether providers can make up the cuts with efficiencies, or if the cuts will jeopardize already tenuous access to care. But if leaders take the broad themes of the law's intent and focus on ways to achieve those goals, the health care community will accomplish the critical mission of safe, affordable care for all citizens.

During the 2011 MHA Annual Membership Meeting, we will examine what's ahead for hospitals in Michigan and throughout the nation as health care reform continues to alter how they do business. We will uncover ways to get more done in less time, with less waste, and discover quiet but powerful leadership qualities that will help us overcome incredible obstacles. Join your colleagues as we reflect upon the value of the unwavering leadership of Michigan hospitals to their patients and communities, today and into the future.

Defining Health Care for Decades to Come
Thursday, June 30 • 9:15 - 10:15 a.m.

Our leaders in Congress and the White House face a fateful fork in the road for health care reform. They can follow the public's fear and confusion down the path of perpetual inaction, or they can lead. This movie can have a happier ending - one that is good for our health, for our health care system, and for freeing our economy from the debt legacy of the past decade. Len Nichols, the director of the Center for Health Policy Research and Ethics and a professor of Health Policy at George Mason University, Washington, DC, will dive deeper into where the debate lies, alternative payment reform models, and how hospitals could position themselves to prosper in a new world of transparency and incentive realignment. As the founder and director of Health CEOs for Health Reform, a group that was pivotal in helping policymakers see that delivery system reform and health insurance reform are necessary and feasible complements, Nichols will give us insight into an ambitious health care strategy.

How to Achieve Top Gun Success
Thursday, June 30 • 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.

In this fast-paced, energetic presentation, speaker, author and former Marine Corps F-18 fighter pilot Ed Rush will show you how anyone can get more done in less time, with less waste. With principles learned in his 13-year Marine Corps career, Rush will present the three keys to speed and success in the Marine Corps that can be easily adopted by the health care industry. The principles Rush teaches are not only good for business and career survival, they are also essential to achieving the most out of your personal life. Rush is sure to inspire and motivate you!

Team of Rivals:
The Leadership Lessons from Abraham Lincoln

Friday, July 1 • 10:15 – 11:15 a.m.

Abraham Lincoln is undeniably one of the greatest leaders of all time. But how did Lincoln make the smooth, and rather sudden, transition from underwhelming one-term congressman and prairie lawyer to robust chief executive during a time of crisis? Doris Kearns Goodwin, worldrenowned historian, will provide us with a monumental history of Abraham Lincoln based on her #1 New York Times best-selling book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. Goodwin inspires business and political leaders of today by teaching Lincoln's quiet but powerful leadership qualities - including his wisdom in building and maintaining teams in the midst of critically trying circumstances and his ability to overcome incredible obstacles. With a deft wit and an uncanny ability to weave stories that put you "right in the room" as history occurs, Goodwin offers extraordinary insight into the lives of leaders who have shaped the United States.
