Uncertain
Times ...
Certain
Leadership
Change was
promised, change was expected, and when 2009 dawned, there was
no question that the status quo would not be an option. That
would be true with health care as well. The long debate about
how to reform the health care system in the country looked as if
it would come swiftly to completion as the year closed. But, as
is often the case, unexpected forces both in and outside the
beltway brought discussions to a screeching halt and it appeared
that, at least for the near term, the future of health care in
the United States would remain in question.
While the
president has signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care
Act into law, the debate will continue to swirl about the impact
of this legislation on American citizens and all health care
providers. But despite this uncertainty, one thing that remains
certain is the constancy of the leadership and the unwavering
commitment of hospitals in Michigan to their patients and
communities. Despite the turbulence and tentativeness, Michigan
hospitals continue to lead the nation in a united pursuit of
improved access, exemplary quality of care, mission-driven
funding and healthier communities.
During the
2010 MHA Annual Membership Meeting, we will examine what's ahead
for hospitals in Michigan and throughout the nation as the
reform package is implemented, take an in-depth look at the
impact of midterm elections on health care delivery, and take a
lighthearted look at the events of the past year. Join your
colleagues as we reflect upon the value of the unwavering
leadership of Michigan hospitals to their patients and
communities, today and into the future.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Health Reform
Thursday,
June 24
9:15
- 10:15 a.m.
Health care
reform may now be law, but the debate about how to implement the
massive changes will continue for months to come. Shaping this
new system will take thoughtful and careful deliberation and
involvement by everyone in health care. With years of experience
in the hospital and health care industry, no one is more
qualified to help us make sense of what is happening in the
nation's capitol than Rick Pollack. As executive vice president
of the American Hospital Association, Pollack has his finger on
the pulse of the ever-changing discussions and twists and turns
taking place daily. More importantly, he will give us an expert
analysis of the impact the reform will have on Michigan
hospitals. With nearly three decades of experience inside the
beltway serving the health care industry, Pollack's session will
be one that is a must-attend for all MHA annual meeting
participants.
Through the Looking Glass ... An Insider's View of Politics Today
Thursday,
June 24
10:30
- 11:30 a.m.
With two
wars waging on the other side of the globe, a battered economy
and a number of hot-button issues making their way through
Congress, it is safe to say that we live in interesting
political times. Back by popular demand, Tucker Carlson will
give us a penetrating look at today's political climate and take
us behind closed doors for a candid, up-to-the-moment look at
events as they unfold. From competitive Congressional races to
watch in 2010 to the latest policies coming from the Obama
administration, you can always count on Carlson for a witty,
informative and frank take on today's news. As a contributor to
FOX News, the editor-in-chief of the newly launched Daily Caller
news site and a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, Carlson
deconstructs the day's events with wry skepticism and a unique
perspective. Don't miss this provocative session!
Funny Business ... A Lighthearted Look at Us!
Friday, June
25
10:15
- 11:15 a.m.
Needless to
say, it's been a challenging year for the nation and health care
providers. There is more in the news that underscores the
negative than the good taking place around us. No one would
argue that the dedicated men and women who lead Michigan's
hospitals face seemingly insurmountable challenges on a daily
basis in pursuit of excellent patient care. During our final
session, we will transform those everyday annoyances from
irritating to hilarious! Join us as our closing troupe, The
Second City, takes an irreverent look at politics today, the
uniqueness of health care and life in general! From the theater
that gave us such famous comedic actors as Dan Ackroyd, John
Belushi and Mike Myers, the performers from The Second City will
be the perfect end to our gathering. Prepare to leave laughing!

Music for Life!
Thursday,
June 24 - 9:30
- 11:30 a.m.
Music has
always played an important role in America's culture, history,
health and happiness. And with the popularity of various
music-based reality shows, we felt using music as the basis for
our guest program would be just the thing to get everyone ready
to go for the remainder of the meeting. From fitness to
relaxation, you'll be energized and revitalized! Our expert YMCA
certified instructor, Angie Moorman, will take us through the
latest fitness craze, Zumba, a Latin-based dance aerobics. It's
a great way to get up and get moving while enjoying your workout
at the same time. This session will be fun and is appropriate
for all ages, so no excuses!
But if a
little cardio isn't your thing, join us in the second hour when
we'll use music to provide a relaxing yet energizing way to
unwind and leave your worries behind you. During this hour
Moorman will use music and yoga to help you relax and clear your
mind. Both strength and flexibility will be highlighted.
You may
choose to attend one or both hours. In any case, you'll leave
with a new sense of well-being and energy! You must be
preregistered to attend one or both sessions.

politics and its impact on health care. Bill Ballenger is the
editor and publisher of Inside Michigan Politics; a former state
representative and state senator; and served as deputy assistant
secretary of the U.S. Department of Health, Education & Welfare
in the Ford administration. Ballenger will provide a look at the
